Business doesn’t stop for startup execs during crisis. But it sure changes.

May 31, 2020

This is an article about portfolio company, Ankervall Technologies.

As the economic uncertainty from the coronavirus pandemic lingers, founders of Southeast Michigan startup companies are, like everyone else, wondering what’s next.

Late May data from research firm Global Data shows that venture capital funding, the lifeblood of most any growing startup, has slowed down significantly in recent weeks, dropping 5.5 percent in March from the previous month. Higher-value deals of $10 million and above have taken the biggest hit, according to the report.

Investor group puts its faith in two local grads who made good

May 11, 2020

This is an article about portfolio company, Akadeum.

Finding and supporting local entrepreneurial talent was always a big part of the plan at Kern Venture Group. It just took a while.

The group’s early investments went to startups based outside the area. But KVG kept its eye on two local grads, one innovating in science and the other in the film industry.

Each entrepreneur achieved huge milestones in time, raising money and landing key deals — enough that the club recently moved forward with significant investments in both companies.

Neither startup is based locally: Film-casting digital platform Castifi Inc. is headquartered in Culver City and Akadeum Life Sciences Inc., a developer of fluid separation technology, is in Ann Arbor, Mich. But each was developed by a bright young mind brought up and educated in Bakersfield.

Target to acquire same-day delivery tech from Deliv

May 7, 2020

This is an article about portfolio company, Deliv.

Target,  which already owns on-demand delivery service Shipt, is in the process of acquiring technology assets from same-day delivery service Deliv. The retailer is characterizing the deal as more of an R&D type of acquisition and not one that will have an immediate consumer-facing impact. Deal terms were not disclosed, but we understand the deal price is nowhere near Shipt’s $550 million ballpark, as it’s not an outright acquisition of Deliv’s business.
